On the cover of a back to school catalog, Target Australia featured a woman in a navy blue hijab kindly smiling at a student.
Target has since received a mixture of reactions. Shortly after a photo of the cover made its way to social media, voices of approval and disapproval rang out.
Many customers have declared that they will be boycotting the company while others have stated they will be “heading to Target for some new scarves” and are encouraging others to do the same.
Target has released a statement say it hopes to “represent the diversity of all Australians” through the catalog which also includes a photo of a young girl wearing leg braces.
I will boycott @Targetaus. Support for sharia is hate crime. #auspol #boycottTarget https://t.co/TMveOB8fwC

I can imagine the hating starting up against Target. I see mum wearing a lanyard. Double trouble: a working Muslim. #peace @MariamVeiszadeh pic.twitter.com/WUlyLLQdEG

I may just visit @Targetaus tonight and buy a few scarfs just to annoy a few bigots. #AustraliaIsDiverse #GetUsedToIt pic.twitter.com/TCOctn9Ub9
