3. I don’t know why I pray but I keep trying
Ahmed Ali Akbar, a staff writer at Buzzfeed, talks about his relationship with prayer. He writes that prayer “isn’t so much a question of belief as it is a question of who I want to be.”
In the essay Akbar discusses his connection to prayer over a span of about 20 years. He starts his reflection with a memory of playing X-Men in the ladies’ break room in his mosque as a 7-year-old and finishes as a 28-year-old who is still working to find his place in his faith.
“When I pray, I don’t feel God,” Akbar writes. “On some lucky occasions, I feel a shiver of tension shoot through me or my arm hair stand up at a particularly beautiful recitation of the Qur’an. When I pray, it’s not because I believe in it, it’s more like: I choose it. There is something in me that needs to keep trying, even when I feel nothing.”
