In Clifton, NJ 18-year-old Abrar Shahin took home the title of “Best Dressed” at her school, Clifton High. The uber stylish teen says she’s always been interested in fashion — making clothes for her dolls as a kid and always knowing the latest trends.
“I spent my morning and afternoons playing dress up,” Shahin told Seventeen.com
Shahin’s win is much bigger than herself. It not only shows her student body that wearing the hijab doesn’t mean you can’t be fashionable, but the world.
According to Seventeen.com Abrar is thrilled to be her school’s “best dressed” and how her winning is reflective of her “more-accepting generation.”
“As a young Muslim American woman, it makes me happy to know that I come from an accepting and open minded generation, ” she said. “My sister graduated from the same high school as me 10 years ago, and she says that she would have never imagined winning this award.”
Shahin says that she hopes to inspires other to express their individuality though their clothes, not worrying about what others might say.
“I just want to let every girl out there know that they should not be afraid to express themselves through their style!” she said. “Growing up can be difficult, but the only way to break stereotypes is to stay true to ourselves and beliefs.”
