2. Minnesota Elects First Somali-American Female Legislator

Last Tuesday a former refugee who proudly wears the hijab named Ilhan Omar was elected into office. She is America’s first Somali-American Muslim woman legislator and claimed her victory in the Minnesota House race.
Omar is 34-years-old and moved to the U.S. when she was 12-years-old after escaping the Somali civil war and living in a Kenyan refugee camp for four years.

3. How women of color are practicing self-care in a Trump world

Fusion reporter Collier Meyerson writes, “After Donald Trump won the presidency last night, I took a klonopin and went to sleep…Food isn’t my comfort today. Women of color are. So I reached out to several who I love and respect to see what they’re doing today to heal.”
Meyerson goes on to share thoughts, advice and tips from women of color.
“I’ve been reading Langston Hughes, and letting myself be quiet. I told a white coworker to leave me alone. I’m remembering how we have already been surviving this shit. We were born surviving this shit. I’m taking my pills,” poet Morgan Parker told her.
“Meditating; I started out the day with yoga and meditation. And a little bit later, I’mma go out and buy myself a nice lunch,” her mother Deidre Meyerson, said.

4. Adriano Espaillat Becomes First Formerly Undocumented Immigrant In Congress

Last Tuesday Adriano Espaillat won the seat for the 13th Congressional District in New York, becoming the first formerly undocumented immigrant to be elected to Congress.
The 62-year-old is also the first Dominican-Ameircan to ever be elected to Congress.

5. A List of Pro-Women, Pro-Immigrant, Pro-Earth, Anti-Bigotry Organizations That Need Your Support
Jezebel features editor Joanna Rothkopf, following the election of Donald Trump, compiled a list of several organizations that “work to fight for the rights of our most vulnerable populations, and ways you can volunteer or donate to make sure they are able to work harder than ever.”
The list includes The American Civil Liberties Union, Border Angels, The Council on American Islamic Relations and EarthJustice.
