The Secret Life of Muslims along with the help of Vox, the Ford Foundation and The New York Community Trust asked some well-known Muslims just what exactly does it mean to be Muslim?
The video features Aman Ali, Wajahat Ali, Amani Al-Khatahtbeh, Reza Aslan, Negin Farsad, Mona Haydar, Maz Jobrani, Ibtihaj Muhammad, Zahra Noorbakhsh, Omar Regan, Sebastian Robins, Linda Sarsour, Layla Shaikley, Dena Takruri, and Iqbal Theba.
Vox writes that the video aims to bring forth the idea that, “there are 1.7 billion Muslims in the world. So what does it mean to be a Muslim? There isn’t just one answer.”
The video makes a point to highlight some of the ridiculous and often misguided questions Muslims often find themselves answering such as, “Why don’t Muslims denounce terrorism?” and “What is a Mosque, what do you guys really do in there?”
altM EIC, Asma Uddin, is an advisor to the project.
The video is spot on and hilarious. I hope it reaches a wide swath of the population. I have long maintained that for us Muslims, image is a huge issue and it is about time we shatter misconceptions, show different sides of being a Muslim and what it really means to be a Muslim in today’s world.
The question was What Does It Mean To Be Muslim ? Not what who does what or refuses to do
To me, a Muslim is someone who believes in one God and accepts Mohamed. Meaning that not anyone who believes and whorships one God is a Muslim. Meaning that if one rejects anything Mohamed said that one self excludes himself, herself from the community of Muslims.
