Many Muslim women have been actively raising the issue of #AllMalePanels at Muslim events, as witnessed by the recent Twitter conversation #NextTimeRememberHer.
Responding to this dilemma of all-male, or otherwise male-dominated, panels, Muslim women have created a pledge that they urge Muslim men to sign. The pledge asks the signatory to refuse to speak at, attend, or otherwise support all-male or male-dominated events and, in cases where the men are invited as speakers, to offer a list of potential women speakers in their stead.
So far, we have over 60 signatures and some of the prominent #MuslimMaleAllies who have already signed are Suhaib Webb (@ImamSuhaibWebb), Omid Safi (@ostadjaan), Faisal Kutty (@faisalkutty), Aman Ali (@amanali), Shahed Amanullah (@shahed).
To help promote the event and demand more attention towards it, a Twitter event, using the hashtag #NoAllMalePanels, is scheduled for Wednesday at 5pm PST / 8pm EST. The event will be hosted by MuslimGirl.net (@Muslimgirl), AltMuslimah (@AltMuslimah), Love, Inshallah (@loveinshallah), Muslimah Montage (@muslimahmontage), Side Entrance (@sideentrance), Zahra Khan (@addfemalespeakers), Sabina Khan-Ibarra (@sabinakibarra), and Shehnaz Haqqani (@qrratugai).
